Here's another article about konapun from back in the 1980s complete with a photo of the toy way back when. Neat to see such an old incarnation of the toy! The toy appears to have been associated with popular dolls called "Charmy Twins." You can see them on the box.

LA Weekly writer Joshuah Berman has written some great articles about the extremes of Japanese culture. This article is an introduction to the konapun toy and even quotes an article in the esteemed cooking magazine Bon Appetit about konapun. In this Japanese blog, from what I can gather from the translation, the author says that konapun toys were made briefly in the 1980s and then weren't made again until about 20 years later. It's neat to read a bit more about the history. If anyone can provide a better translation that Google's auto-translation, we'd love to hear more about what this article says.
